The toll-keeper at Harrow Gap had set her price at one silver penny a mule, and for thirty years nobody had argued with her. Then a drover called Tomas Eberle came up the pass in May with forty sheep and a grin, and told her the road belonged to the king's men, not to a widow with a gate and a chalk board.

She did not raise her voice. She asked him what his sheep would fetch at the market in Sallow, and he told her, and she said that was a fair price for sheep that had walked two hundred miles on bruised feet. Then she asked what the same sheep would fetch if the pass was shut in snow and the buyers had gone home. He stopped grinning.

She named a toll of two pennies a head, which was a third less than the king's men wanted and three times what she had ever charged. He tried to beat her down. She let him talk until the light went orange on the ridge, then folded her hands and said the gate stayed shut until he paid, and that she could wait longer than sheep could.

He paid. She wrote the count in chalk on the lintel, the way her mother had, and beside it she cut a small mark for each coin, so that the next person who came asking would see the price had never once been a gift. In the morning the snow came down over Harrow Gap, and she slept well.
