If not now, when hand lettering
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
The image shows the words IF NOT NOW WHEN hand-lettered in stacked, uneven capitals in white on a black background. The strokes have a grainy, chalky texture with slightly irregular edges, and the O in NOT is drawn as a larger rounded letter. The composition is centred and fills most of the frame, with faint folds visible in the black backdrop.

Dear Arthur,

I am writing this at the kitchen table of Mrs Pennock's boarding house, with the sea going on outside as if it has no idea how long I have been meaning to leave. The landlady keeps a slate by the front door for the weather and the tea times, and this week it has said nothing but "Fish Friday" and "Mind the step." Yesterday I found the chalk had rolled under the hatstand, and I have been thinking about it ever since.
You will remember how I used to say I would go to the training college once the spring term ended, and then once the harvest was in, and then once Father stopped asking. I have been a lodger here for four years now. The guests come and go and I am still folding their napkins into the same tired swans. Mrs Pennock says I have a gift for leaving things tidy, which is not the same as leaving.
Last night, when the house was quiet and the tide had turned, I took the chalk from under the hatstand and wiped the slate clean with my sleeve. I wrote the thing Grandmother used to say over the kitchen range, the one about if not now, then when. My letters came out crooked and too large, the O in NOT swelling fat like a dropped stone. It looked like a shout. Mrs Pennock came down at six, read it, and laughed so hard she had to sit on the stairs.
I have bought a ticket for Thursday's train. I will leave the slate as it is for her to find.
Love, Ruth
