Infinity heart with heartbeat line and quote
Black and grey · Flash
A black design drawing of an infinity symbol shaped into a heart. A heartbeat trace runs across the left loop with a date beneath it, and the words Until I see you again are written in a script face inside the right side of the heart. The artwork is solid black on a white background, with bold, smooth strokes and no shading.

Mo had been lettering narrowboats for thirty-one years, and he could tell a customer's trouble from the way they held a paint tin. The woman who came into the yard at Stourport that wet Tuesday held a folded strip of paper as if it might blow away. She wanted words on the cabin side, set under a loop she had drawn on the back of a bus ticket.

He looked at the drawing first. Someone had shaped the infinity sign into a heart, the left loop long and lazy, the right side curling up like a wave breaking. Across the left loop ran a ragged line of peaks and troughs, with a date written small beneath it. He knew a hospital print-out when he saw one. The paper she was holding was the same.
"Until I see you again," she said. "Can you do it in the script? The one on the old chapel signs."
He mixed black with a drop of linseed, loaded the squirrel-hair brush and started on the capital U. The strokes came easy. He let the tail of the final n swing out past the edge of the heart, the way his own father used to finish his letters. When he reached the heartbeat he slowed right down, because the line had to run true or the whole thing would look like a slip of the hand.
She watched him finish the date and nodded, once. Then she laid her palm flat against the board beside the wet paint, not touching it, and kept it there while the boat knocked gently against the wall.
