Infinity paw print and heart on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A small tattoo on the inner wrist combines a black infinity loop with a purple paw print on the left and a red heart on the right. Partial black script runs along the loop, cut off by the edge of the frame. The linework is thin and clean, with flat colour in the paw and heart against the black lettering and outline.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The dance hall at Coldharbour had a loose board by the side door, and every Thursday a grey lurcher came through the gap beneath it and lay down under the piano as if he had paid his sixpence. Nobody claimed him. Mrs Abney, who swept the floor after the reels, said he was waiting for someone, and that was all the answer she would give anyone who asked.

Old Tom Pelling played the fiddle for the dancers and kept a biscuit tin on the windowsill for the door money. Between tunes he would rap the tin with his bow, and each time he did, the lurcher lifted his head. Tom said the dog knew the rhythm and not the tin, which was foolishness, but he kept rapping until the young ones began counting the taps instead of the steps.

In April a girl called Ada Quennell came in off the Bristol road with a cardboard box under her arm. A hand-lettered sign on the lid said until they all find a home. Inside were four pups and a tabby cat with one ear. She set the box down by the piano, and the lurcher sniffed it once, then lay with his nose against the cardboard as though he had been counting them all along.

By midsummer the tin was full of coins for the vet and the piano had no dog under it at all. On the last Thursday Tom played a slow waltz and rapped the wood with his bow, and the lurcher rose, walked the length of the floor, and sat down at Ada's feet to wait for the next reel.
