Infinity symbol with fingerprint heart
Other · Black and grey · Photo
A single continuous black line forms an infinity symbol that loops across the skin. Above the left loop sits a heart filled with a fine grey fingerprint pattern, shaded with soft, dense lines. The composition is plain and centred, on pale skin with even lighting.

The ink had gone tacky in the June heat, so you wiped the pad twice before Walter Pell laid his thumb on the card. He pressed too hard, the way men do when they are frightened of spoiling something, and the whorls smeared at the edge. "Make it a heart," he said. "Not a stamp. A heart." You told him the post office did not do hearts. He told you that was why he had come to you, because you were the only one in Ashby Cross who had never laughed at him.

You took the card to the back room and drew the loop first, one line that wandered out and back without lifting the nib, the way his letters to Doreen had wandered for three years across the Atlantic. Then you held the card under the lamp and tried to fit the print to the shape of a heart, angling his thumb in your head until the ridges curved like the inside of a shell. It took four attempts. You spoiled three cards, and he paid for every one without complaint.
When the fourth went out on the morning mail, you watched the sack swing onto the van and thought about how no two fingerprints repeat, not in a million hands, and how the loop had no beginning or end to catch on anything. Walter came in the next Thursday to ask whether it had gone. You said it had. He looked at the lamp rather than at you and said he would wait for the answer the way you wait for a kettle, without watching it.
The reply came in October, one line in a neat hand you did not recognise. You did not read it aloud. You put the envelope in the till drawer, under the stamps, where he would find it when he came in to ask again.
