Infinity symbol with forever script and block text
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
The design shows a large infinity symbol drawn in black lines that thicken and thin along the curves, with the word forever written in a cursive script that runs into the lower right loop. Above it, the word MAROONER is set in plain uppercase sans-serif capitals. The image is black ink on a plain white background with no shading or colour.

The tide had been drawing the same figure of eight across the sand for three days, and Tom Hebble had started to take it personally. He sat on the crown of the rock with his knees up and watched the water pour in through the western gap, swing wide around the reef, and slide back out through the eastern one, as if it were looking for something it had dropped.

The Marooner was painted on her transom in letters a child could read, and the Dorcas had carried that name since before Tom's grandfather was born. He had signed on for one season's cod off Iceland and been put ashore on this lump of granite instead, after a quarrel over a bottle of gin and a man called Sayer who had drowned anyway a week later. The captain had left him a flint, a tin of biscuit and a promise to come back, which was the kind of promise sailors made only when they did not intend to keep it.
On the fourth morning he scratched a word into the wet clay under the lichen, the way the old hands did when they wanted a ship to know a man was still alive. He wrote forever, then stopped, because it looked like a lie. Instead he drew the loop the tide made, a lazy eight lying on its side, and pressed his thumb at the crossing where the two channels met.
The sail appeared at noon, small as a moth. He had expected to feel only relief, and he did feel that, but mostly he felt that the sea had finally finished its sum and got the answer right. He waded out with the flint in his fist and did not look back at the drawing, because he knew the tide would have it before morning.
