She sang the same two words over and over, in the tongue of the fishing villages up the coast, and the mate could not make out the rest.

Nobody aboard had sailed the Tern Passage in forty years. The charts showed it as a loop of open water between Skarra and the reef at Holm, a path that turned back on itself like a figure laid on its side. Ships went round it or went through it, and the ones that went through were seldom seen again until they came out the far side, sometimes a week later, with the same cargo and a crew that could not agree on the date.

The captain, Ivo Scarrow, had made his name on that passage. His wife Maren had stood on the Skarra quay the morning he left, and she told him that if he went round the loop he would come back to her by the road he left, because the water would give him no other choice. He laughed at her. He went through.

When the Marigold finally cleared the far end, the sun was rising in the wrong quarter and Maren was on the quay with a lamp, though it was full day. She did not ask where he had been. She only said, "One love, one road, Ivo," and he understood that she had counted the years for him while he sailed the same curve over and over, and that the old woman singing below had been her, waiting.
