Paw prints, infinity and heart on a wrist
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two solid black paw prints sit above a thin infinity loop that curves down into an outlined heart on the right. The linework is smooth and even, with the paw pads filled in solid black and the heart drawn as a single outline. The design is shown in black ink only against pale skin, with a soft blue fabric visible behind the arm.

Right, shift up on the bench and stop kicking that bucket, because this is the part where the dogs come into it. You'll have seen the two prints on the wet sand below the slip, sitting side by side like they're waiting for the ferry. That's Tam and Morag. Tam was a collie with one white ear, and Morag was the little grey pup the Mackays gave the lighthouse keeper's boy when she was no bigger than a loaf.

Every morning the boy, Calum, walked the pair of them along the headland path, out to the gate at the north rock and back again past the sheep pens. Round and round in a long figure of eight, the way the sea draws it when the wind is light. The dogs never once tired of it. Calum said the path didn't so much end as turn back and keep going, the way a thought does when you can't put it down.
Then came the winter the boat didn't come back, and the path was all the boy had left of anybody. So he walked it alone, and the dogs walked it with him in their heads, and where the two loops crossed, by the old fallen cairn, he tied a red ribbon to a gorse stem and called it home. The tide took the ribbon and the gorse and most of the cairn. It never took the crossing.
Now mind, I'm not telling you what it means, you'll work that out on the way home. Look at the sand instead. Two prints, and then two more coming round the long curve to meet them at the place where the path bends into a heart.
