The path is finished at last, and you were right about the loop. Mr Okafor from next door laid the paving stones in a figure of eight around the pond so nobody has to turn back on themselves, and Bramble spent the whole of Tuesday supervising from the wheelbarrow. When the mortar was still soft she ran straight across it, four neat prints in a row, and the cement man swore, then laughed, and said he'd leave them, since a dog who walks across a garden is a dog who means it.

We have had rain all week, the sort that turns the lupins blue-grey and the sky over the allotments into a wash of teal, then lilac where the sun breaks through behind the church. I took a jam jar of water down to the pond on Thursday and sat with the paint box on my knee, trying to get that evening's colour right. I kept splashing too much on the paper, so it looks like the spray off a dog shaking herself, which is more or less what happened.

Bramble died in March, as you know, and I have walked the loop every morning since, round and round, because the stones don't stop where she did. Yesterday a blackbird went up from the far side and I stopped at the crossing point, where the two circles meet, and found myself grinning at four small prints gone hard as the day they were pressed in.

Come in June, when the sweet peas are out, and we will walk it together. I'll leave the gate on the latch.
