A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit nearer the fire, the lot of you, and mind the draught from the door, for the snow has been at the shutters since noon. You'll want to hear about Mab and the grey bitch Tallow, because that is the story they tell in the valley when the pass closes, and I was the one who opened the gate for them.

Tallow came down off Hob's Rise in the third week of February, with a torn rope round her neck and a limp in her near fore. Mab was the shepherd's girl from Leys Farm, eleven years old, sent after the ewes and never home. Two nights they walked the same loop of the old drove road, out past the stone sheep pen and back again, the way a finger traces a figure eight on a misted window. Each time they came round to the crossing by the broken signpost, Tallow stopped and waited, and the girl stopped too, and then they turned, because the snow had taken the path and only the dog knew where the ground still held.

On the third morning the drifts had flattened everything. I heard scratching at the back door and took it for the wind, but it was the dog, and behind her the girl, blue at the lips and laughing the way children do once they have stopped being frightened and only feel tired.

I put them by the range. Tallow lay with her forepaws crossed, the pads pressed together as if she were praying, and did not stir until the bread was out. Mab slept a day and a night. When she woke she drew a sideways eight in the frost on my window with one finger, then pressed a small heart into the curve of it. Tallow thumped her tail twice against the floorboards, and we all watched the loop close on itself until the wind changed and the road showed through.
