Infinity symbol with script name on foot
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A healed tattoo on the top of a foot shows an infinity symbol with a name written in cursive script running through its loops. The linework is fine and even, with the infinity loop shaded in soft blue-grey and the lettering in darker ink. The foot fills most of the frame against a pale blue background, with red toenail polish visible.

Sit nearer the range, the pair of you, and mind the kettle, because this is the long way round and the kettle will want its say. My grandmother kept the tide tables for the Sallow Bar ferry, and she always said the sea writes its own infinity twice a day, out to the rocks and back, never once finishing the sentence.

Marnie Cole ran that crossing with a single oar and a tin of boiled sweets, and she had a habit of tying a knot in her shawl for every passenger she carried. By the autumn of 1931 the shawl was more knot than wool. The fishermen teased her about it. Her husband, Ivo, who mended nets on the slipway, showed her how to count the tide instead, low to high and high to low, tracing a figure of eight in the wet sand with his heel, so she never had to wonder where the water was going.
Then a northerly came in on a Thursday and the Sallow Bar boat did not come round the point. Marnie walked the shingle until the lamps went out along the front. Ivo found her at dawn with the shawl unknotted in her hands, and she said the sea had given her back a loop of it. Nobody believed her, not until the boat came rolling in slow and dripping, three men aboard and all of them alive, and Marnie laughed so hard she sat down in the surf.
She kept the shawl after that, every knot still in it, and she never tied another. "Some things want going round," she told me once, "not counting." Now, drink that tea before it cools, and mind the stair on your way up.
