The parcel comes off the 6:40 at Carrowmoor halt with its string already tied in a knot you don't recognise: three soft loops that fold back through one another, and a fourth loop standing up from the top like a stalk. Nobody on the platform has claimed it. Mr Pardoe, the stationmaster, says to bin it, but you have been logging parcels for the lost property shelves since spring, and you know a deliberate hand when you see one.

Under the lamp you turn the knot slowly. The arcs interlock so that no end can be found, and the only way out is to follow the loops back to where they started. The brown paper label has a single pencilled letter, E, and a date eleven years gone. Inside is a shoebox of dried primroses and a folded timetable for a service that no longer runs.

On your day off you take the branch line to Ferrow Cross and walk up Mill Lane until you find the house with the blue door. A woman in an apron stands on the step and looks at the box for a long moment before she speaks. She left it on the bench the morning her husband's train pulled out for the last time, she says, and she tied that knot herself so that it would hold until he came home.

You sit at her kitchen table and ask if you may untie it. She nods. The loops come apart in your fingers easily, the way knots do when nobody is pulling on them any more. "It was meant to hold," she says, and you tie it again, the tail threaded through the top loop, and leave it on the table between you.
