Internet script in a heart on upper arm

Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A single-line heart outline sits on the upper arm, with the word Internet written in cursive script across its middle. The linework is thin and even, in solid black ink with no shading. The tattoo fills the centre of the frame against plain skin, with a grey sleeve at the top edge.

Maureen Gilroy found the cardboard on bench four just after the 14:10 pulled out of Hebden Crossing, a scrap no bigger than a beer mat. Someone had drawn a heart on it in biro, then written INTERNET across the middle in joined-up letters, and then, with a ruler or a steady hand, run a line straight through the whole thing like a level on a shelf. She turned it over. The back was blank apart from a faint ring where a mug had sat on it.

She logged it in the ledger under Other, which was where anything went that didn't have a handle, a strap or a name on it. Her supervisor, Keith, leaned over the counter with his tea and said it looked like something a teenager would put on a bedroom door. Maureen said the teenagers she knew didn't write that neatly, and Keith said that was a very Maureen thing to say, and went back to his crossword.

A woman in a green anorak came to the hatch on Thursday asking whether anyone had handed in a sign. She described it perfectly, down to the line, and when Maureen asked why she'd left it on a bench she said she hadn't. Her brother had made it when they were small, for a den under the stairs, and it had been missing since their mother moved house. Maureen passed it across the counter. The woman held it for a long time and then laughed, not unkindly, and said the line through the heart was meant to be a cable, because that was how the house had been connected to the world.

When the 17:02 came through that evening, Maureen shelved the ledger and stood by the window listening to the whistle. She thought about the wire that wasn't there, and the heart that had only ever needed one straight line to make it hold.
