Kawaii taco with lettering on an upper arm
Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A cartoon taco with large round eyes and a smile sits above the words I DON'T WANNA 'BOUT IT in black capitals. The taco has bold black outlines and yellow, red, green and pink fills, and the surrounding skull, leaves and butterfly use similar bright colours. The tattoo is photographed close up on the upper arm against a plain pale background.

The taco had been on the griddle since eleven, and by half past two it had turned a deep, honest gold, which my Auntie Marisol said meant it was ready. The taco did not agree. My cousin Leo had drawn its two enormous eyes in biro that morning, and whatever he'd put into them, they looked at every customer with the flat disappointment of a head teacher.

The man in the grey suit wanted one. He'd been circling the van for ten minutes, reading the hand-painted board above the hatch, which Leo had lettered in black capitals and which said I DON'T WANNA 'BOUT IT under a drawing of a taco that looked slightly guilty. "What does that mean?" the man asked. "It means the chilli's hot," Marisol said, which was a lie, because the chilli was mild and she knew it.
Then the rain came sideways off the car park, and the van shuddered, and the taco slid off the plate, bounced once on the counter and dropped neatly into the gutter. I went after it on my knees between the puddles. It was sitting on the kerb beside a gull, both of them looking up at me with the same expression. I picked it up, dusted off the grit and carried it back to the griddle.
The man in the suit bought two. The taco went home that night in a paper bag, and Leo says it has never once complained about the rain since.
