Two hands held together, each with a small red lettered tattoo on a finger: a K with a heart on one and a Q with a heart on the other, shown in a fine red line style.

King and queen of hearts finger tattoos

Lettering · Hand · Mixed · Photo

Two hands are held together against dark fabric, with a small red K and heart tattooed on one finger and a red Q and heart on a finger of the other hand. The linework is thin and simple, with the red ink filling the heart shapes and outlining the letters. The close crop centres both tattoos, with the grey tattoos on the upper hand and dark nail polish visible at the edges.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The snow had sealed the Hollin Inn for three days when the drover Tobias Crane came stamping in from the yard, with a woman behind him who said her name was Maud Ferrier and that she had walked from Kendal with a pack and a deck of cards. The landlord, Abel Sowerby, had a fire, a pot of barley, and a table nobody had sat at since Martinmas. He let them have all three for a penny a night, provided they did not cheat.

They played through the first night for matches, then for buttons, then for the stories each would tell. Tobias lost most hands and laughed about it. Maud won and never laughed, but she kept the king and queen of hearts near the top of the deck and turned them face down whenever the lamp guttered. Sowerby noticed that those two cards were the only things in the room that were kept clean.

On the fourth night the wind dropped, and Tobias asked what she wanted for her passage. She said she would play him for the road. If she won, he would walk her down to the lower village when the thaw came. If he won, she would stay the winter and mend the harness. He looked at the two red hearts and said he had nothing she did not already hold. They played until the candle was a stub, and the last trick fell to neither of them.

In the morning the thaw had begun to drip from the eaves. Sowerby found the deck squared on the table, the king and queen laid face up side by side, and a ring of wet beside them where two cups had stood. Maud and Tobias were already gone down the valley road, their boots leaving two dark lines in the slush. Sowerby kept the cards on the mantel after that, for any guest who needed a game to get through the snow.
