Fine line red tattoos of a K with a heart and a Q with a heart on two fingers, with the other hand showing dark script tattoos.

King and queen of hearts on fingers

Fine line · Hand · Mixed · Photo

Two hands rest together, with a small red king of hearts tattoo on one finger and a matching red queen of hearts tattoo on the other. The linework is thin and simple, with solid red fill on the hearts and outlined letters. The other hand carries dark script tattoos across its fingers, and the black nail polish and dark background add contrast.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The deck came up one card short of a full set, and Dolly Pryce swore it had been the king of hearts all along. Nobody at the Anchor believed her, least of all the men who had lost their week's wages to her over the green baize that winter. She had a way of shuffling that made a card vanish and a face appear, and she never went anywhere without a pair of cheap scissors in her apron pocket.

The night the lads from the dockyard came in, the stakes went up. Tom Harrow, who had a habit of tapping the table twice before he called, put his last shilling on a hand he could not win. Dolly looked at him over the rim of her glass for a long time. Then she slid her hand across the cloth until her little finger touched his, and said she would take the bet only if he took the queen as well.

He laughed, thinking she meant a wager on the next deal. She meant something else. Within a week the pair of them were sitting in a back room in Hull, where a man with a sewing kit and a tin of red ink marked a small heart on the side of each finger, the king on his, the queen on hers, the lines so fine they looked as if they had been drawn with a hair.

Dolly kept the missing card, and Tom kept his shilling in his boot. They never played another hand together. The deck sat in a drawer above the bar, one card short, and whenever the landlord asked after it, Dolly only said it was exactly where it ought to be.
