King and queen of hearts on fingers
Fine line · Hand · Colour · Photo
Two hands are held together with fingers interlaced. One finger carries a small red letter K beside a red heart, and a matching red letter Q beside a red heart sits on a finger of the other hand. The linework is thin and uniform in solid red ink, and the dark trousers and car interior form a plain background.

You learn the card game the winter the ferry stops, sitting in the back room of the Anchor with your coat still on, because the stove only warms the far wall. Old Tobias deals with his thumb pressed to the deck as if he is holding down a moth. He tells you the king of hearts is the only card in the pack that keeps its word, and the queen is the only one who knows when he is lying about it.

Hands are the real currency here. Losers pay in tide-times, in mending nets, in a bottle of brandy from the Brittany boats. You lose three rounds running, and you start to watch how the others hold their cards, how Mags lays her fingers flat on the table as if she could feel a draught through the wood. On the fourth night she slides her hand across to yours, not to bluff, just to say the stakes are settled. Her fingers lace through yours, and the two of you sit like that, cards face down under your knuckles, while Tobias counts out the pennies.
When the last hand comes, Tobias turns over the king and the queen together, both red, both hearts, and says nothing, which is how you know the ferry is coming back. You fold. Mags laughs, the first real laugh you have heard from her since October, and the lamp above you flickers, and the sea knocks softly against the harbour wall like someone asking to come in.
