Traditional style colour tattoo of a grey koala holding a pina colada beside a palm tree and banner reading PINA KOALAS, on the top of a foot.

Koala with a pina colada on the foot

Traditional · Other · Colour · Photo

A grey koala with a wide smile holds a pineapple cocktail with a straw and a flower garnish, set against a red sunset and a palm tree. A banner reads PINA KOALAS and the words DO YOU LIKE sit above in black lettering. Bold black outlines, flat fills and solid colour in red, yellow, green and pink give it a classic traditional look, and the design wraps across the top of the foot.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The rain had been coming sideways across Harrow Lane Market since eight, and by eleven you had sold three pineapples, a bag of wilted mint and a single lime to a man who apologised for taking it. Your stall sagged under a tarpaulin that drummed like a snare. Nobody wanted fruit in weather like this. Everybody wanted something hot in a paper cup, and that was the problem, because your uncle Ray had promised to bring the flask and had not come.

Then a girl of about nine stopped under your awning and pointed at the hand-lettered card propped against the pineapples. "Is that a koala?" It was a koala, grey and grinning, holding a sweating cocktail with a paper flower on the rim. Ray had drawn it in 1994 on the back of a betting slip, and you had never had the nerve to throw it away. "He's having a pina colada," you told her. "Do you like pina koalas?" She frowned at the spelling, then at you, then laughed so hard she snorted, and bought a pineapple with two coins and a button.

Ray turned up at half past twelve with the flask, a soggy copy of the racing pages and a grievance about the bus. He saw the card and groaned. "Still selling that? Nobody gets the joke." You said the girl had got it. He poured you tea that tasted of tin, and the two of you stood under the drumming cloth while the rain eased.

By two the sky had split into a thin orange seam above the car park. You folded the card, tucked it under your arm and walked home through puddles that caught the last of the light. Before you left, you propped the card back against the pineapples for Monday, because a joke is only worth telling if someone is still standing there to hear it.
