A single-line drawing of a dog with a skull-like face, large round eyes and tall ears, standing with a tail curling upward. Thin black linework with no shading, set among loose swirling flourishes on the left and right. The ink is black on skin with a plain blue background and a tiled floor visible around the limb.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The commission said to draw Biscuit exactly as he was, and that was the trouble, because exactly as he was meant a face like a teacup skull, two black eyes the size of farthings and ears that stood up as if he was always listening for the kettle. Edna had painted spaniels and a parrot called Admiral, but never a thing that looked back at her this hard. She sat at the kitchen table in Hastings with the window open to the gulls and the cheap fountain pen her husband had left in the drawer.

Her son had told her to just sketch him quick and be done. Instead she did what Frank always said a good draughtsman never did, which was lift the pen. One line. Start at the tip of the left ear, down the bridge of the nose, round the little jaw, along the back and up into a tail that curled like a question mark. She let the pen wander off into the swirls, the loops that were Frank's whistling, and back again, never once breaking the ink.

It took most of the afternoon. When she finally looked up, the tea had gone cold and the light had slid off the lino. The drawing was ugly and alive, a dog made of one long thought.

The next morning she posted the sheet to the family in Bexhill with a note saying it was finished. The reply came a week later, a single line in careful handwriting: he still looks at the door. Edna pinned it above the sink, uncapped the pen, and started again on a fresh page, at the ear.
