Laugh script with heartbeat line and heart
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
A handwritten script word reading laugh runs into a heartbeat trace on the left and ends in an open heart outline on the right. The lines are even black ink strokes with no shading, and the design sits on a ruled planner page with a time grid and a small Wednesday label. The image is a drawing of a design rather than a photo of skin.

You have the proving cabinet open before the radio finishes the shipping forecast, and the trays are still cool enough to rest your wrists on. Above the bench, the chalkboard says Wednesday in Gwen's looping capitals, and under the order list someone has written laugh and underlined it twice, as though it were a seasonal loaf they meant to sell.

The paper strip from the old proof logger hangs off the hook beside the oven. It spikes and dips in a jagged line that Gwen insists is a heartbeat, a rise that climbs, falls back, then steadies, and she taps it with a floury finger whenever the dough behaves. You tell her it is only the thermostat, that bread has no pulse. She laughs at that, the short bark she has used all month, and says you have never once been right about yeast.
By half four the first van idles outside, its headlights pale on the glass. Gwen stops scoring a batch of tins and tells you the word was her husband's. He wrote it on the lids of her lunch boxes when he worked nights on the ward, so she would have one thing to open at three in the morning. He has been gone since March, and she has kept the board as it was, because wiping it feels like the wrong kind of quiet.
You slide the batch into the oven and wait while the window fogs. When you open the door the bloomers have split along their scores into soft open hearts, and Gwen, without looking up, says it is the trace doing its job again. You do not argue. You pass her the peel and let her be the one to say it.
