Leather label tattoo on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a forearm with a tattoo styled as a clothing label, showing a stylised logo with a registered mark above the words 100% LEATHER and MADE IN PORTUGAL in small capitals. The lettering is rendered in black ink with clean, thin outlines and solid fills, and the piece is shown in black and grey only. The arm fills the frame diagonally, with a silver wristwatch and bracelets at the wrist and a striped cuff and orange fabric at the top right, against a softly blurred teal and yellow background.

The label had to be sewn by hand, Senhor Abílio said, because a machine would stitch a lie as neatly as a truth. He sat at the bench above the Rua das Flores with the lamp pulled low, a folded cowhide across his knees, while his granddaughter Inês fed him the small cotton tabs one at a time. Outside the shutter, a tram bell rang twice and went quiet.

"Square the mark," he said, tapping the stencil with a bent nail. She had drawn the little registered circle four times that week, and four times it came out lopsided, like a face trying not to laugh. The ink was thin and black and smelled of pine resin. "Thin lines. Anyone can make a thick line look expensive. Only a fool needs thick lines to tell you what he is."
She asked whether the hide was truly all leather, since the supplier in Alcanena had sent a cheaper split last month. He said nothing for a while. Then he took the big shears and cut the bad piece into strips for thread, and the sound filled the room like rain on a tin roof. "The words are not for the leather," he said at last. "They are for the stranger who buys the jacket, so he knows a man's name is on it and cannot hide behind a factory gate."
In March, when his hands shook too much to hold the awl, Inês stitched the labels alone. The first one came out crooked along the top edge. He held it under the lamp for a long time, turning it slowly, and then he nodded and said it was the first honest thing to leave the shop in years. He tucked it into the pile with the others, and she watched it go out the door in a stranger's pocket.
