A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Brother Anselm, the sun has come back to the valley at last, and I have spent the whole morning on my knees in the wet grass trying to make the bronze dial agree with it. You will laugh, but the gnomon has been throwing its shadow a full finger's width too far east since the spring floods shifted the stone. Master Corvin says the fault is mine. I say the sun has been wandering, the way it does when it is courting the lion, and that a dial must be forgiven for following it.

Yesterday a boy from the glassworks came up the hill with a basket of sunflowers. They grow wild along the ditch by the mill now, taller than him, their faces turned all one way like a congregation. He said the women of the village had hung them in the doorways to keep the fever off, and that they would not wilt for three days if cut at dawn. I did not believe him, but I took them, and I set one in the cup of the dial's base, and by evening it had bent its head so exactly toward the brass that I wept a little, which you may also laugh at.

So I have drawn the thing for you as best I can with charcoal on the back of the tithe ledger: the loop of the gnomon's shadow, the three blooms, the black triangle where the tip of the pointer rests when noon is true. Keep it. If the dial ever fails you, look for the flower that is leaning hardest, and trust it over me.

Your brother in the sun's slow work, Benedek
