Leopard print heart and crossed bones on chest

Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A heart filled with leopard spot pattern sits centrally on the upper chest, with a bone at each upper corner and one at each lower corner forming a crossbones arrangement. The heart and bones have bold black outlines, and the spots and body are shaded in soft greys. The image is framed from the neck to the cleavage, with a black polka dot top at the edges.

The hatch seal gives on the third try, and you are the first person to breathe Dock Nine's air since the flood. Rust drifts down the shaft like ash. Your torch finds the gantry, then a drowned drone's cage, then the notice board, where someone has pinned a heart cut from an old cargo manifest and painted with spots, the way the tailors on Sallow Street marked cloth they would not sell twice.

Underneath it, in grease pencil, Ansel has written: Bones for the crossing, heart for the rest. You know that hand. He ran the tug Marigold for eleven years and never spelled a word right in his life. The two bones at the top are ribs from the Pelican, the ferry that went under the causeway in the wet winter. The two at the bottom came off the Harriet Lowe. You always thought the crossbones were a pirate's flourish, a joke for crews with more nerve than sense. Now you count them properly, and find a fifth, stacked in a crate by the sluice, its tag numbered to match a name on the manifest.

The tide has been taking the causeway for a month, so you understand Ansel's ledger well enough. Every spotted patch is someone who signed for a load and never came home. You could walk away with the crate and sell the bone to the yard by noon. Instead you lift the shortest bone free, press it into your coat, and leave the heart on the board where the next salvager will have to read it. On the way out, your torch catches the spots, and for a moment the whole board looks as though it is breathing.
