Let it be lettering on the side of the body
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a dark script tattoo reading "Let it be..." on the side of the torso, just below the ribs. The lettering is made of thin, even strokes in a single dark ink, with a slightly teal tint. A red, green and white patterned fabric covers the upper part of the frame, and a blurred green hedge with yellow flowers sits in the background.

Sit closer, the lot of you, and mind the stove, for the wind off Skerrow has teeth tonight. You want to hear about Agnes Tully and the lamp. Her husband Dan kept the light on that rock for thirty-one years, and when the glass cracked in the great storm of '58 he went up the iron stairs with a can of paraffin and a temper. Agnes stood at the foot of the tower and told him to leave it. The ships would see the dark and steer wide, she said, and the rocks would have them anyway. He told her to hush and went up.

She did not hush. She went out to the garden wall, where the runner beans were drowning in their own sticks, and she tore a wet length of cloth from the washing line and knotted it round her waist for something to hold. Then she sat on the wall and watched the beam swing out and sweep back and swing out again. Every time it came round it lit her hands, and her hands were shaking, and she let them.
Dan came down at dawn with his coat torn and no paraffin left in him. The lamp had gone out at two. Nobody knows which ships came through the dark and which turned back for home. Agnes never asked. The next spring she planted a row of marigolds along that wall, and when Dan asked her what she meant by it she said, "Let it be," and she meant the lamp, and the boats, and him.
