Libra symbol on the ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A close view of a leg in a white sneaker standing on an orange basketball on grey asphalt. A small, thin black Libra scales symbol sits on the skin just above the shoe, drawn in clean single-weight linework with no shading. The ink is solid black against the skin, and the composition is angled so the tattoo is the focal point of the frame.

The beam of the grain scales at Ostia had a catch in it, a notch the bronze smith never filed away, so that a heavy pan always sulked a finger's width to the left before it settled. Every carter who came through the store felt it without knowing why. I had weighed for the Tiber guild for eleven years and knew the catch the way a man knows a bad tooth. I never told the factor. He paid me by the sack, and the catch favoured the sellers, which pleased him.

On the ninth day of the month a boy came in carrying a sack of his mother's barley on his shoulder. He was perhaps ten, with a bruised chin and a bronze as (a single coin) clutched so tightly the metal had printed his palm. He wanted to buy a measure of salt, and the salt was priced by the pound. I hung his sack on the left pan, and I watched the beam sulk as it always did. Then I took the sack down and hung it again, and this time I put my own thumb under the hook and held the beam steady until it rested true.
The factor shouted from the doorway that I was a thief to my own employer. I told him the scales had never been so honest, and the boy stared at the level bar as if it were a miracle. He paid nothing and took his salt. I still have the notched beam in my ledger, drawn in charcoal, a small crooked line beside the figures I did not write down. Some mornings I stand in the store before the carters arrive and watch the two pans hang still, waiting for someone to tell me which side was right.
