Life's a tangled web lettering on the ribs
Lettering · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo is a single line of black text reading "Life's a tangled web" in a typewriter-style font, set horizontally across the side of the torso. The letters are solid black with clean, even edges and no shading. The photo is taken in warm, dim light, with skin tones in the centre and dark clothing and a red fabric at the edges.

Fenella Marsh drew the spool out and found the trouble: a knot of black silk, spun into the spindle by something that had lived inside the machine for years. Spiders, she guessed, though the spider was long gone and only its work remained, a grey lattice folded between the platen and the carriage. She teased it loose with a hatpin, one strand at a time, while Okonedo squinted at the type bars through his loupe.
"Look at that," he said. "Whoever used this last typed one line over and over."
She tipped the carriage back. On the paper roll, faint and even, the same sentence had been struck a hundred times: Life's a tangled web. Each line sat a little more crooked than the last, as though the typist's hand had grown tired of being straight. Fenella folded the strip into her apron pocket and said nothing about it to Okonedo. By the end of the week the machine typed clean, and she kept the strip pinned above the bench. Whoever had typed it had kept at it all night, she decided, unpicking one knot with the left hand while the right went on tapping out the words.
