Line outline of a head with glasses
Other · Black and grey · Photo
A single-line black outline of a head with tousled, spiky hair and large square-framed glasses. The linework is even and bold, with no shading or fill, and the skin around it shows a little natural texture. The design is centred on the skin and sits against a plain background.

Tuesday, and the rain has got into the ink again. I lost my good fineliner under the radiator, so I'm working Mrs Okafor's order with the cheap biro that skips whenever I press too hard. She wanted her son drawn on a napkin, the way I used to draw every child who sat at Brenda's corner table, and I told her I could only manage a head and a pair of spectacles, because a face gives the game away. She said that was exactly what she wanted.

I drew it without lifting the pen. That's the trick, and it's the only trick I've got. Start at the nape, carry the line over the crown, let it break out into the wild bits where the wind would catch it, bring it down the left side, then the glasses: two squares joined by a bridge I always make a shade too long. Mrs Okafor laughed so hard she knocked her tea over, and Brenda said it was the first honest reaction she'd seen at that table since the spring.
The napkin went home in her coat pocket. Three weeks later a young woman came in with her phone held out and a tattoo photo on the screen, asking if I was the one who'd drawn the head. She wanted it copied exactly, the same spikes and the same too-long bridge, because her uncle had once shown her the napkin and she'd never forgotten it. I told her the secret was never to lift the pen, and that some lines only come out right if you don't look at them too hard.
I went back to my table afterwards and started another head for a man in a wet raincoat, one unbroken line, and I didn't look up until the glasses closed.
