Black fine line tattoo of a lollipop with the words SUCK IT above it, placed on the upper arm.

Lollipop and SUCK IT lettering on upper arm

Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A black ink tattoo of a lollipop with a round head and a long stick sits below the capitalised words SUCK IT in plain block lettering. The candy head is shaded with horizontal hatching on its upper half, and the outlines are thin and even. The design is centred on a pale, slightly reddened section of upper arm against a dark sleeve.

Summer of 1952, Saltcombe pier, two lolly carts side by side like a pair of squabbling pensioners. Walter Pym sold striped rock and pear drops from a green cart with a brass bell. Harold Dunn had a red cart and a round, sticky sort of charm, and he was sweet on Edna Thwaite, who worked the bakery counter and had no time for either of them. Harold wanted to be noticed. So one Tuesday he took a scrap of board, painted two words on it in his best sign-writer's capitals, and hung it from the front of his cart. Every gull on the pier could read it. Edna could read it from the chip shop. Walter went the colour of his own rhubarb jam.

Edna came down the boards with her apron still on, stood in front of that cart, and looked at Harold for a long, long time. Then she bought the biggest lollipop he had, a lemon one the size of a cricket ball, and handed him a shilling. 'Go on,' she said, and the whole pier heard her. Harold went as red as his cart. Walter rang his bell so hard it nearly came off.

So here's the thing about my husband, God rest him, who was Harold. He never took that board down. It's still in our shed, and I'll tell you what, it's the only sign he ever painted that told the truth. Now raise your glasses to Priya and Tom. May your sweets be shared and your sign be honest, and for pity's sake, somebody get me a sherry.
