Love always, Charlie lettering on a leg
Lettering · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of two lines of black text tattooed on a leg, reading Love always, Charlie in a typewriter-style serif font. The letters are solid black with clean edges and no shading or colour. The text sits centrally in the frame against warm skin, with light hair and a blurred background.

Dear Nell,

The typewriter came up from the Hartley house on Tuesday in the back of Mr Pruett's van, wrapped in a tablecloth that still smells of his wife's lavender. The g sticks and the capital Q has lost its tail, so forgive the crooked lines. I have been sitting in your father's greenhouse with the door propped open, trying to write this without crossing out every second word, and the tomatoes have split their skins in the heat while I sat here doing it.
You asked me last spring why I never write anything I cannot take back. I thought it was a joke, but it isn't. A typed line is a line you have to commit to. There is no rubbing out, only a fresh sheet and a longer walk to the post box. So here is what I have decided. On Saturday I am going to walk the long way to the station, and I am going to stop at the gate where the beans climb the wire. If you are there, I will say the thing I have been typing around for a year.
The rest of this letter can stay as it is, because I have run out of ribbon anyway. Keep an eye on the greenhouse for me, and water the basil on the north side only. The south side will rot if you give it a drop.
Love always, Charlie
