The telegraph boy came up Chapel Lane on a Tuesday with his cap pushed back, and everyone in Hollin Bridge knew the message was for Mrs Pargeter before he reached the gate. Nobody in 1953 sent a telegram to a house unless somebody had died or been born or gone to sea, and Ruth Pargeter's husband had gone to sea in March.

Folk in the village said afterwards that Walter had never once in twenty years put a word of love on paper, not even on the Christmas cards, which he signed with a T because he could not bring himself to write the rest. So the crazy was what made them talk. Ruth walked down to the post office, bought a pencil, and on the back of the telegram copied the words out again in her best hand, with a small red heart drawn between the first two.
Thursday came and the boat did not. Ruth kept the paper in her apron pocket for a month, and when the second letter arrived saying he had found work on the Clyde and would be a while yet, she read it aloud to the hens, who did not mind.
