Snowflake tattoo on the top of a foot

Geometric · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small black snowflake with six arms sits on the upper side of a foot, just above the ankle bone. The lines are thin and even, and the design is filled with solid black ink on bare skin. The photo is taken from above, showing the wearer's pink mesh-topped flats, blue jeans and a grey carpet around the tattoo.

My cousin Ilona crossed that pass the year the river froze to its bed. She carried a wooden box with a sliding lid, and inside were six brass hooks, no bigger than a fingernail, each one filed to a different angle. The customs officer, a thin man called Petrov with a moustache like a broom, asked what she was smuggling. She said, 'Only weather.' He laughed until he saw her face.

Here is the part the old women leave out. Ilona had been a clockmaker's apprentice, and she believed every snowflake is a small clock that stopped at the exact moment it touched the ground. Petrov had a daughter who had gone quiet after her mother walked out onto the ice. Ilona opened the box, took out one hook, and pressed it into the frost on the sill. Six arms, perfectly even, and the wind dropped for the length of a breath.

Petrov did not stamp anything that night. He waved her through, and in the morning the hook was gone from the sill and the girl was asking for bread in a voice like a bell. Ilona never went back for the rest. She said the others were still waiting for the right cold. Pass me the ash stick, and mind the sparks.
