Maiden, mother and crone script lettering with pentacle
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
Three lines of flowing black script read Dance like the Maiden, Laugh like the Mother and Think like the Crone, centred on a cream background. A small outlined pentacle sits beneath the last line. The linework is smooth and even with no shading, and the black ink on cream gives a clean, high contrast layout.

The rope had gone slack again by the time the last lamp was lit, and Nell stood at the foot of it in her stockinged feet, arguing with the wind. Outside Ludlow the field was more mud than grass, and the banner over the gate had lost its G to the weather, so it now read CIRCUS in a way nobody had planned.

Bet, who had hauled the iron weights for twenty years, sat on an upturned crate and laughed at her, a big rough laugh that rolled out under the canvas and made the two remaining ponies twitch. "You'll dance on that rope or you'll dance on nothing," she said. "Pick."
Iris did not laugh. She was the oldest of them, older than the tent, and she kept the ledger in a tin box with a star scratched into its lid. She had painted the same five-pointed pentacle on the centre pole every spring since the owner's father bought the outfit off a bankrupt fair. "Nobody comes to see the rope," she said, licking the end of a pencil. "They come to see whether you're still willing to fall."
Nell climbed. The rope bit her palms and swung the lamplight across the torn roof, and for one breath the tent was full, faces packed to the canvas, coins ringing on boards that were not there. She turned once, twice, and came down laughing. When she landed in the mud, Iris wrote a single line in the ledger and shut the box. Attendance: three. Profit: enough for the ponies.
