Mandala tattoo on a foot

Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A bare foot rests on a light blue towel, showing a grey mandala or floral tattoo on the top of the foot near the ankle. The linework appears fine and the shading is soft grey, with a small amount of dotted detail around the outer edge. A hand with a ring is in the frame at left, and open pots of red and dark product sit on the towel, so the composition is a tight, close-up view.

I have spent the last month tracing the eight petals of the Lantern Court onto vellum, one fine line at a time, because the old surveyors drew the city in straight streets and never once showed how the water runs back to the sea. Everything in Carrow Vale turns round a single well. When I laid my compass on the dome of the sundial, the shadows fell into the same pattern as the marks cut into the granary wall, a crown of little rings pressed into the stone by someone afraid of forgetting the hour.

The dots are the difficult part. Every bead I set down is a house where a family kept a lamp lit through the winter tax, and the Chancellor wants them counted for the census. I counted two hundred and eleven before my eyes gave out. The rest I guessed, which I confess to nobody but you.

I am sending the sheet north with the salt cart. Keep it flat and keep it out of the damp. If the Chancellor asks why the outer ring is shaded so softly, tell him the city has been fading at its edges for years, and that the centre is the only part still worth mapping. Your loving brother, Tamsin.
