Mandala with a heart on a calf

Blackwork · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A large mandala of layered petals, circles and radiating dots fills the frame, drawn in solid black outlines. The centre has dense dotwork shading around an unshaded white heart. The design is rendered in black ink only, photographed straight on against a pale background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mind the thread, Ada, it goes where it likes if you let it. My mother taught me that over a cushion of pins in a cold room above the bakery, and I taught it to you, though you were too young to hold it. Look at this one. Twelve petals, then twelve more, and every one of them a little door that opens onto the next. Count the dots along the edge. There are more of them than there are days in a fortnight, and that is no accident.

The Harrow sisters ordered it in the spring of the bad frost, a collar for the vicar's wife, who had lost a baby and wanted something to hold. They sent a drawing with no heart on it. My mother said a pattern with no centre is only a wheel that turns and turns. So she left a space in the middle, dark as a well, and asked the woman to sit by the window until she could say what she wanted there. The woman sat three days. On the third she asked for a heart, but not a red one. White, so that it would show through the black like a lamp left on in a house.

That is why the dots around it are so close, you see. They are not hiding the heart. They are keeping the dark off it, one pinprick at a time, the way you would keep your hand around a match. It took my mother nine evenings. Her fingers bled on the cotton and she said the pattern bled too, a little, into the weave, where nobody could see but the wearer.

Don't pull that loop out. Leave it. Some things are meant to have a knot in them where somebody's patience got tired and then got back to work.
