Matching balloon houses on wrists

Forearm · Colour · Photo

Two wrists show a pair of matching tattoos, each depicting a cartoon-style house carried aloft by a cluster of balloons. The linework is dark and moderately bold, with light shading on the walls and windows. The balloons are filled with bright pink, green, yellow and orange, while the houses remain mostly outlined and lightly shaded, and the composition is set against a pink sleeve and blue fabric.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You reach the balloon stall at the far end of Hollin Green fair just as the generator coughs itself quiet, and the man behind the counter is already knotting the last bunch to a hook on the gate. Pink, green, a yellow faded to cream. He pulls each knot tight with the care of someone mooring a boat. "Those are spoken for," he says, nodding past the dodgems at the wooden house tethered there, its painted windows still lit from inside.

You know that house. Two storeys, a crooked chimney, a front door the colour of old mustard. It belonged to Maud Ferrier, who ran the coconut shy for forty years and swore the house had once lifted off in a gale and come down in a field of mangels near Selby. You laugh. Maud does not. She presses a ticket stub into your palm with your name penciled on it and says the house has been waiting for someone with hands small enough for the rope.

So you take it. The wind off the stubble fields is sharp, the waltzer's music thins to a tinny thread, and the balloons pull, not hard, but with the patience of something that has made up its mind. Your trainers leave the cinders. Below, Maud shrinks to a hat and a wave, and the fair folds itself into a string of bulbs that look, from up here, like a necklace somebody dropped.

The house creaks over the river, and you realise it is not alone in the sky. Somewhere to your left, a second rope hums against the air, and when you look down at your own hand the knot is there too, tied by fingers you have not seen since the summer you were nine. "Keep hold," calls a voice you know. You do.
