Matching bird and heart line tattoos on forearms

Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

Two forearms show matching tattoos, each with a small solid black bird at one end of a thin continuous line that curves into a heart. The line on the left arm is red and the line on the right arm is blue, and the birds sit at opposite ends of their lines. The fine linework contrasts with the solid black silhouettes, and the photograph is taken straight on with the two arms side by side.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The swallows have gone, Ruth, and I've finally taken the wool down from the washing line. You'll remember the red you sent me from Harrogate, and the blue I found in Mum's sewing tin. I ran them from the greenhouse hook to the old pear tree, the way you told me, so the birds would have something to follow home by. Half the village laughed at two women stringing wool across the garden like bunting.

What nobody expected was the heart. The line sagged in the wind and kinked itself into a loop over the rhubarb, and the first pair that came down to look sat on either end and would not leave it alone. Every evening after that they went back and forth between your end and mine, bringing the moths in from the beans, and by August the loop had worn a pale shape into the soil that I could see from the bedroom window.

Then the storm took the red line in September and dropped it in the hedge on your side of the lane, and I stood at the fence with my blue end in my hand feeling foolish. The birds did not mind. They carried the broken thread across the road themselves, one strand at a time, and knotted it to your gatepost in a neat little heart before they left.

So I've left the blue on mine. Come up at Easter and look at it. I think the swallows have made their own arrangements, and I am not going to be the one to argue with them.
