Two cat head tattoos on forearms
Geometric · Forearm · Colour · Photo
Two cat head portraits are shown side by side on forearms. The left tattoo shows a black cat with yellow eyes, built from angular facets in dark blues and navy with touches of purple, and a faint outline of another tattoo sits above it. The right tattoo shows a grey and white cat with orange eyes and a pink nose, also drawn in faceted planes, with a white t-shirt visible at the edge of the frame.

Sit down, the pair of you, and mind the crates. You want the cat story, you'll have it the way my grandmother told it, which is to say badly and at length. There was a black cat called Tuppence who lived above the pawnshop on Shilling Row, and she had eyes like two lamps left burning in an empty house. Every night at the turn of twelve she walked the roofs, and every night the city broke itself into angles for her to step between. The slates were wet, the gutters rang, and the wireless in the chemist's window hissed out the shipping forecast like a man counting coins.

Now a pawnbroker's lad called Eamon Veld had been stealing brass from the church clock, a little at a time, to settle a wager he'd already lost. He couldn't climb the spire. He could only climb the pawnshop roof, and from there the cat watched him fumble his pockets and drop a gear that rolled off into the dark and rang on the cobbles below like a small bell wanting to be heard.
She didn't stop him. She sat on the ridge with her tail wrapped round her feet and looked at him the way you'd look at a sum you already knew the answer to. Then the clock, which had been running slow since Easter, struck thirteen, which it has never done before or since, and the whole street looked up at once.
Eamon went home with his pockets empty and the clock kept its gears. If you climb Shilling Row on a wet night, look up past the chimneys. You'll see two lamps on the ridge that nobody ever remembered to switch off.
