Other · Mixed · Photo
Two feet are shown side by side, each with a cartoon animal beside a green signpost. The left foot has an orange, long-bodied figure with red spots and a red nose labelled DOG, and the right foot has an orange figure with a blue nose labelled CAT. The bold outlines and flat colour fills sit against a grey carpeted background.

The cargo boat Harriet came into Ardmore harbour with her sail in rags, and the men who hauled her in found a long orange creature asleep across the coils of rope. It had two heads on one body, one with a red nose that barked when it woke and one with a blue nose that purred and would not stop looking at the gulls.

The harbourmaster, a patient man called Iain Pell, could not get a straight answer from either head about where it wanted to go. So he nailed two green signposts to the quay. One he lettered DOG and pointed it at the fish sheds. The other he lettered CAT and pointed it at the chandler's, where the cod heads were kept in barrels. Each morning the creature walked to whichever sign its own head favoured, and each morning the other head complained all the way.
The town grew used to the arrangement. Children learned their letters from the posts. When the herring fleet sailed in April the creature went out with it, one head at the bow and one at the stern, and came home in October with the same argument unsettled and a little more salt in its fur.
On the last morning of the season the signposts were found standing side by side on the quay, both pointing out to sea. Nobody in Ardmore has ever moved them back.
