Matching cat and bird hearts on thighs

Traditional · Thigh · Mixed · Photo

Two tattoos sit side by side on the thighs, each showing an animal head inside a pink heart with a blue scalloped outline. The left design is a cat with green eyes and bold black outlines, and the right is a bird with a beak and green eye. The bold outlines and flat fills give a traditional look, and a tortoiseshell cat sits on the grass in the background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Nell, the cat has taken to sleeping on the coal sack again, and Dorothy has stopped pretending she minds. You'll remember the bird that came aboard at Gloucester, the thin grey thing with the cracked beak who wouldn't eat anything but bread soaked in tea. Dad called it a sparrow. Mum called it trouble. Pilot called it dinner every morning, then sat on the rail looking hurt when it flew off to the next lock.

Last Tuesday the bird got itself wedged in the lock gate chain, half drowned, and Pilot went in after it without a thought. I thought we'd lose them both. Instead the cat came out dripping and furious with the bird clamped in his jaws like a mouse, and set it down on the cabin roof as gently as anything. Dad said it was the first kind thing he'd seen Pilot do in six years.

Since then they've been inseparable, which is a sight. The bird rides on the cat's back through the locks and the cat lets it. Mum has painted a little heart-shaped sign for the cabin door with the two of them inside, pink with a scalloped blue edge, the way the old boat painters used to do their names. Every morning I see them both looking out of it.

The company wants us to move south in March and I don't know if I want to go. You'd laugh at me. I keep thinking about what Pilot would do if I left him behind. Write soon and give my love to the twins. Pat
