Watercolour cat and bird on a thigh
Fine line · Thigh · Mixed · Photo
A large sketchy cat face covers the outer thigh, drawn with thin black lines and filled with loose pink and turquoise wash, with a single open eye and a striped ear. A small line drawing of a bird sits lower down, near the knee, in black ink with a touch of red. The image is a close, slightly angled photograph of the thigh against a cobbled background, with the ink shown in mixed colour.

Mabel Cutts had swept the Starlight Palais for eleven years and had never once seen the cat use the front door. It came in through the gap under the fire exit every Thursday, damp from the canal, one eye always half open as if it were still listening to the band. Tonight the trumpeter fluffed a note and the cat stopped dead beside the cloakroom hatch, ears turned towards the stage.

The bird arrived after the second waltz. It was a sparrow with a loose thread caught around one leg, trailing a length of pale yellow wool like a dropped ribbon. It landed on the piano lid, hopped twice, and regarded the cat with the bored contempt of something that had flown three streets to make a point. The cat did not move. Mabel swore its striped ear twitched in time with the drummer.
When the dancing thinned and the lights went amber, the sparrow hopped down the keys and tugged at the wool. It led the cat across the sprung floor, past the bandstand and under the velvet curtain, where the yellow thread ran out of a torn lining. Mabel followed with her broom. Behind the curtain sat a row of lost-property bags nobody had claimed, and in one of them lay a half-knitted cardigan with the needles still threaded through.
Mabel knelt and worked the knot loose while the cat watched her with its one open eye. The sparrow scolded them both from the rail, then flew out through the fire door as if it had only come to deliver a message. The cat stretched, licked a paw, and settled on the cardigan as though it had been measured for it. "Right," said Mabel to nobody, and went back to sweeping, leaving the thread curled on the boards like a question nobody needed to answer.
