Matching cat outline tattoos on wrists
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two black cat outlines sit on the inner wrists of two arms that are pressed together. The larger cat has a fluffy, sketchy outline built from broken strokes, with two inner lines for legs and a bushy tail, while the smaller cat has a clean, continuous outline and a curled tail. Both designs use black ink on pale skin against a plain light background.

Dear Nell,

The Marigold put in at Hull on Tuesday and I've been meaning to write since. You'll want to know about the cats. Biscuit, the big fluffy one who came aboard as a kitten in a coal sack, has taken to sitting on the galley step like he owns the place, which I suppose he does. He has a bald patch on his left flank where the ship's boy tried to clip him and got a scratch for his trouble. Pim, the sleek little tabby from the chandler's at Goole, is the opposite. She walks the rail with her tail hooked up at the end like a question mark and won't come below for love nor fish.
Cook says they're sisters in all but blood, though I've never seen them so much as share a bowl. Every morning Biscuit takes the warm spot by the range and Pim sits on the crate by the door, and every morning the two of them watch the sea through the porthole as if they expect it to explain itself.
Last Thursday we hit a squall off the Humber and the hatch cover came loose. I was on my knees in the hold, sure I'd lose a finger, when I heard a yowl above me. Pim had gone up the ladder into the wind, and Biscuit, who hasn't climbed anything in two years, was clawing after her with his ears flat. By the time I got topside they were both wedged behind the winch housing, dripping, glaring at me as if I'd caused the whole mess.
We've been ashore since, waiting on the new cover. Biscuit is asleep on my bunk now. I haven't the heart to move him.
Write back soon, and tell Dad the kettle's mended.
Your brother, Tom
