She took out the heels, set them on the board, and spread them with whatever was nearest, which was the jam for Plum and the peanut butter for Pat. A small red heart cut from a strawberry sweet sat above each one like a flag. Plum thought this was the most anyone had ever done for him. Pat said it was very nearly too much.

Mrs Abbott wrapped them in greaseproof paper and tucked them into the tin for the school run, the two of them pressed together at the edges where the paper folded. Plum decided, in the dark of the lunchbox, that the damp had been worth it.
