Matching crown and script wrist tattoos
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands are clasped together over white bedding, with a black crown tattoo on each wrist. The left crown has ornate, shaded linework with the words One Life written in script beside it, and the right crown has lighter, sketchier lines with One Love in script. The image is lit softly and the composition is centred on the clasped hands and wrists.

Dear Marta,

The crown above the north gate came down in the February gales, and I have spent three weeks on my knees in the wet rubble trying to find all its pieces. Mr Pryce from the council says we should pour concrete over the arch and call it done. I told him the stone remembers its own shape, and he looked at me the way you used to look at my spelling.
The masons who carved it cut the crown with a lacework of fleurs and tiny pearls, but someone later chiselled the lower band flat, so the whole thing sits like a cap that does not fit. I found the missing band yesterday, wedged behind a fallen merlon with a bird's nest of wool in it. Two stones fitted together like a clasp. I sat there with my palms on them for a long time, remembering how you and I swore in the scullery that we would only ever have the one life, and that the one love was each other. It felt absurd even then, when we were nine and wore our mother's cast-off tiaras to bed.
Tomorrow the lime mortar goes in. I will mix it myself, the way Dad taught us, and I will set the band myself. When the crown is back in its place it will be the only thing in this valley that still looks like it belongs to a king. Come home for the unveiling if you can. Bring the tin of shortbread you always pretend you did not buy.
Love, and only the one of those, Hannah
