Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The photo shows two hands resting on a red and cream leaf-patterned fabric, with the inner wrist of one arm in focus. Gather round, gather round, and mind the mud by the big top, for the ground is soft this side of the river. I'll tell you about Ada Dunmore and her ring-toss, the only game on the Gilchrist Fair that never once cheated a child. She hung two hoops of blackened iron on the same peg, each as wide as a dinner plate, so they always travelled in pairs.

The trouble came the autumn the fair stopped at Carrick Bay, when a boy named Tobias Wren lost his mother to the sea. He came to the ring-toss every evening for a week, and every evening he threw both rings at the one peg and missed. Ada never told him to stop. She took his pennies, handed back the iron, and said, "Round things always come back to where they started, love. Keep your wrists loose."
On the Saturday he landed both rings clean, one after the other, and the peg did not shake. Ada wouldn't give him the prize, a china dog with one ear. She took his left wrist in her cold fingers, turned it under the lamp, and pressed a sooty thumb to the skin there. Then she drew a circle with the rim of an iron ring dipped in lamp black, and told him to hold still while the second one closed.
Now tell me, does a circle ever end, or does it only go round until somebody stops watching it? Ada said the second circle was for whoever he would catch next, and that he'd know them by the way they came back. Mind your step on the way out, and mind the wet grass.
