Matching green and red mushroom ankle tattoos
Ankle · Mixed · Photo
Two pairs of feet are shown, each with a small cartoon mushroom tattoo on the ankle: a green one on the upper foot and a red one on the lower foot. Each mushroom has a rounded cap with a white spot and a simple face with eyes and a mouth, drawn in bold outlines with flat fills. The ink is bright and saturated against the skin, and the feet are placed in a close, centred composition on a kitchen counter.

Mind the puddles, the lot of you, and come under the awning before the rain gets down your necks. You want the tale of the two caps? Then listen, for I only tell it once before the stallholder starts shouting about cabbage prices. Behind the fish market, in a tin trunk gone orange with rust, lived a green cap and a red cap, round as bread rolls, each with a white spot on its crown and two little eyes that never once stopped looking surprised.

Every morning Mrs Odile Penrose hauled them out and set them on her trestle beside the chestnut man, a penny apiece, and every evening they went back into the trunk unsold. Nobody ever bought the pair. A lorry driver took the green one for his dashboard. A girl in muddy boots took the red one and said she would wear it on her ankle where her gran's bracelet used to sit. Neither cap had ever shared a pocket with the other, and they minded that more than they let on.
So one wet Thursday, when the gutters ran like rivers and the chestnut man had gone home, the caps rolled themselves off the trestle and down the slope towards the drain. The green one went first and the red one bumped after it, and in the dark they found each other by the sound of the water. What they said down there, the gulls never told. But by morning two small mushrooms were stuck to the chestnut man's cart, one above each wheel, and Mrs Penrose never did find the trunk key again.
Now, the cabbage price. No, sit down, I have not finished. Those two are still out there, mind, going round the stalls in the wet. Buy one and you will find the other waiting by your door in the morning, grinning like it knows something.
