Matching heart, cross and anchor wrist tattoos

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

Two wrists are shown side by side, each with a matching black tattoo of an outlined heart topped by a small cross, with an anchor shape below it. The times 9:44 and 9:46 sit beneath the designs in a simple serif numeral style. The linework is thin and solid black with no shading or colour, and the two images are framed close together in the centre of the photo.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The tide bell at Saint Hild's hung in the seaward tower, and by the custom of the house it had to be rung by two brothers at once, or the fishermen would not trust it. Osric and Wystan were given the ropes the same winter, two boys with chapped hands and no sense of the sea. Each evening they climbed the cold stair, took their places either side of the bell frame, and waited for the abbot's hand to drop from the window.

The autumn Wystan fell out with the cellarer over a barrel of ale, he stopped coming up the stair. Osric rang alone for a week, and the bell sounded thin and wrong across the flats. On the eighth evening the fog came in off the water so thick that a man could not see his own boots. Osric heard footsteps on the stair and did not turn round. Wystan took the second rope without a word, and they pulled together, and the bronze rolled out over the mud until the last boat came scraping home.

Years later the abbot's ledger still held the times they rang, written in two hands. The bell was logged at a quarter to ten, the turn of the tide, though the brothers themselves always said it was two minutes past when they were sure of it. Nobody could say which of them was late. The old men on the quay said it made no difference, since the boats came in either way.
