Two palms face up with a matching tattoo on each wrist. Each design pairs a thin outlined infinity symbol with a line of text beneath it, one reading EPH 5:25 and the other EPH 5:22. The photograph is black and white, so the linework and any shading appear in greyscale against the skin.

Every metre had a stamped mark. You could start anywhere, she said, and come back to where you began without ever lifting your hand.

Nobody had printed ink on the station in forty years, so when Bram Okafor came up from the dry dock with a stencil kit and a pot of soot paste, the whole corridor gathered to watch. He would not say who the numbers were for. He pressed the stencil to my left wrist, then reached across the rail and did the same for Ilse Varga, whose hand was already waiting there as if she had known all along.

Three weeks later the tether sheared during a spin test, and we were the only two on the outer spool when the lights turned amber. We counted the loop out loud the way the old drills said to, one turn at a time, her voice steady against mine. Each time the count came round to the start it was the same stretch of cable, only lit from a different side.

They pulled us in on the ninth hour. Bram was waiting at the lock with the stencil kit still in his coat pocket, and he did not ask what had happened. He looked at our wrists, nodded once, and went back to work. I have never found a better answer, and I have stopped looking for one.
