Matching green ribbon and semicolon wrist tattoos
Other · Colour · Photo
Two paired tattoos sit on the inner wrists, each showing a green ribbon loop with a pair of dots above or below it. The ribbons have black outlines and soft green shading that gives them a gently dimensional look, and the dots are solid green. The photograph is taken straight on, with the two wrists placed side by side against a plain skin tone background.

The guest book at Saltcote House has a green cloth spine gone soft at the corners, and you open it on the first wet morning of October because Dell has already gone out to the bins and the kettle is still cold. Mrs Pargeter wrote every entry in violet ink, and the names of lodgers from 1961 to 1974 run down the page in a column like cleats along a pier.

What catches you is the punctuation. Where other landladies would have stopped, Mrs Pargeter halts mid-line and sets down a semicolon, then carries on with the next thought: 'Room four, two nights; the gentleman prefers the window, the radiator knocks after eleven; send him the good eggs.' Page after page of it. You count thirty-one before the wind slams the back door and Dell shouts from the yard.
She reads it over your shoulder with wet hands. 'She never ended a thing,' she says. 'Not once in fourteen years.' You tell her that isn't quite true. The last entry, dated the week the boarding house closed, reads 'Ellen's train at half past six; the boat is late again' and then nothing, the ink simply stopping at the edge of the paper.
You take the pen from the jar with the chewed cap and sit down beside her. Neither of you writes a full stop. You add a line instead, in your own hand: 'Kettle on; the tide is turning'. Dell lays the green silk marker across the page, and you leave the book open on the table, the sentence unfinished, while you go to put the kettle on.
