Matching moon phase tattoos on forearms
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The image shows two forearms turned towards the viewer, each with a row of moon phase tattoos curving in an arc from the wrist towards the elbow. The moons are rendered as simple outlines and partly shaded circles, with some phases filled in and others left as open lines. The ink is black and grey on pale skin, set against a floral patterned top and a plain pavement background.

Dear Nell,

The big top came down in Shrewsbury on Tuesday, and Mr Vasko stood in the mud with his hat in his hands like a man at a funeral. Eleven wagons, two elephants we couldn't feed, and the calliope with its missing keys. I sold the trapeze rigging to a scrap man from Telford for forty pounds and a flask of something that tasted of petrol. You'd have laughed at me haggling in my tights.
Remember what you said the night before the last ring show, when we inked the moons on our wrists with a borrowed machine and a sewing needle? You said a moon only looks whole because the rest of it is hiding in shadow. Waxing, waning, dark. I used to think that was a sad thought. Now I count the phases on my arm like rungs on a ladder.
The new moon comes Thursday. Vasko has offered me a job driving the ticket van to Blackpool for the winter season, and I think I'll take it, though I'd rather walk. The dark bit on my wrist is still raw from the needle, so I keep it covered under the cuff of my good cardigan.
Come up to the lay-by on the A49 if you can. Bring the old lamp. We'll sit on the tailgate and watch the full one rise over the cattle market, and I'll show you which of the pale ones I've decided is still ours.
Love, Marguerite
