Two fists bumped together show matching black script lettering reading Mrs and Mr on the fingers, a lettering tattoo on the hand.

Matching Mr and Mrs finger tattoos

Lettering · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two clenched fists are pressed together, each with a single black script word tattooed across a finger: Mrs on the left hand and Mr on the right. The linework is smooth and solid black with no visible shading, and the ink looks slightly softened, as in a healed tattoo. The image is in natural colour with no colour ink, and the fists fill the frame against a white shirt and dark clothing.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit down on that crate and mind the wasps, they've had the windfalls all week. You want the story of the two old trees at the bottom of Chapel Field? Right. Their names were painted on a board nailed to the gate, Mr and Mrs Pardoe, though nobody living remembers a Pardoe. What they did was grow on one root. Old Walter grafted a Bramley onto a Cox's stock in the spring of the big frost, the wood took, and then the pair of them went at each other for forty years about who should bear first.

Every August a bough would sag and one tree would drop its fruit over the wall onto the other's side. Mrs would sulk and give up her blush early. Mr would hoard his green until October, then shake the whole orchard with it. My mother said the pickers learned to work those rows with their elbows out, because if you got between them the wasps came off the sugar in a cloud.

Then came the year the sawfly took the blossom and neither tree set a single apple. The men wanted the stock grubbed out. Walter's grandson came up with a knife and cut the trunks apart at the graft line, and sap ran from both like a held breath. Next morning there was a bud on each. Nobody believed it. Nobody has managed to cut them apart since.

So when you pick at Chapel Field, take a windfall from either side. They keep better when they're eaten together, and they've never once fallen far from each other.
